Cecilia Andrews is a French-Chilean artist who lives and works in Paris. Her work is inspired by nature, identity, and our intrinsic connection to one another. Gifted a magazine in braille by a friend, Andrews began incorporating braille paper into a series of collage portraits. This addition has gone well beyond adding texture to her work, paving a path to new inquiry for the artist - exploring the identity of our deepest humanity and questioning social perceptions through a polysensory approach. What are the limits of visual representation? How is prejudice conveyed through the world of images today? Are we as sighted people really able to see or understand what surrounds us? Andrews states, “My approach through braille is rather symbolic and cognitive. I seek to evoke the difficulty that we as human beings have to really see, to perceive and consider others”. Andrews has been working on a portrait project made with braille paper which symbolizes both our own blindness to meet others and the importance of getting closer to better understand one another. Cecilia Andrews is represented by Municipal Bonds Gallery in San Francisco and is currently working on her future exhibition, scheduled for 2023.
