Damien Hoar de Galvan

Do you understand, 14 x 15 x 3.5 in, 2021

Damien Hoar de Galvan is an artist living and working in the Boston area. Since 2008, he has been creating an ongoing series of small-ish (typically under 2 feet in height), colorful, intricately pieced-together sculptures made of wood.

For brevity’s sake, I’ll call these painted sculptural objects. They begin as amorphous ideas that then develop, grow, and change as they are built. Through trial, error, and intuitive play they become stand-alone objects representing my time and displaying the different marks and choices that were made along the way. - Damien

He currently works out of his basement studio, creating daily to stay engaged with his practice. For Damien, it’s not just about the finished piece. In fact, the process seems to be the most important aspect of his artwork. It’s personal, it’s a way to feel focused, inspired, and excited - trying to capture some feeling in a physical and tangible form.

The act of making something is a way to keep myself busy and feel like I’m being productive in some way. I begin with small bits of wood. Then it is a matter of playing with them until I can see some way they will start to fit together. It’s sort of like a puzzle with no picture to use as a reference. Visual and structural problems often quickly arise and it is then that a piece will begin to develop. I suppose I almost seek out the problems in order to continue making them, it all becomes a way to stay interested and motivated to work. - Damien
